The region's ground rule is quickly told: throughout the municipalities of Zell am See and Kaprun, dogs must be on a lead or wear a muzzle, assistance dogs excepted (official regional info, as of August 2026). In return your dog gets plenty: a lake that's open for swimming, marked dog zones and cable cars that take four-legged passengers. Hikes that work with a dog
The hut loop on the Maiskogel with its wide alpine tracks is the easiest start; the loop around the Klammsee above the Sigmund Thun Gorge is the shortest one with water access. Dogs on leads are welcome at the Mooserboden reservoirs too. On alpine pastures, keep your dog close around grazing cattle.
Swimming spots, the Klammsee & dog zones
Lake Zell is the only swimming lake in the Pinzgau where dogs may swim, outside the lidos and observing the lead rule; inside the lidos, dogs aren't allowed. The second swimming option sits right in Kaprun: the Klammsee, which also has a marked dog zone for off-leash running. A further dog zone lies at the Erlberg in Zell am See by the nature reserve at the southern shore (official regional info, as of August 2026).
Rules & practicalities
- Lead or muzzle: required throughout both municipalities; on cable cars and the local railway, both together.
- Dog waste stations: stand along the walking paths and dog zones, bags included.
- Hot days: glacier trips are harder on dogs than on people. On hot days the Klammsee and shaded forest paths are the better pick, and water for the dog belongs in every rucksack.
- Vet: practices are available in neighbouring Zell am See, about ten minutes by car.
The chalet for dog people
At Chalet Kaprun your dog is a guest, not a fee line: dogs stay free of charge, and several dogs are fine by arrangement, just mention the number in your enquiry. Around the house you'll find 1,000 m² of grounds and ground-level terraces; the garden is not fenced, so off-leash time is best supervised or in the region's dog zones. Inside: 180 m² for up to 10 people, and after the mountain day the evening belongs to the Finnish sauna.
