Kaprun is a small village with a big programme: a glacier at 3,000 metres, two reservoirs high up in the mountains, a gorge, a family mountain and a 12th-century castle, all within a few kilometres. Kitzsteinhorn & Gipfelwelt 3000
Salzburg's glacier mountain: cable cars take you up to Top of Salzburg at 3,029 metres, to the viewing platform, the Nationalpark Gallery and Cinema 3000. In July and August the ICE ARENA adds snow slides in midsummer, and from October the glacier ski season begins.
In short: ride up €61, free with the Summer Card; the gondola line starts right in the village, about 50 minutes to the top.
Kaprun high-altitude reservoirs
Two turquoise reservoirs at 2,000 metres, held back by dam walls over 100 metres tall. The ride up by transfer bus and Europe's largest open funicular is an experience in itself; at the top you'll find dam tours, via ferratas and a mountain restaurant.
In short: season until 11 October 2026, ride up €39.50, free with the Summer Card; no private cars, parking at Kesselfall.
Sigmund Thun Gorge & Klammsee
320 metres of wooden walkway through the canyon of the Kapruner Ache, ending at the quiet Klammsee lake with its nature trail. On hot days it's the coolest spot in the village, and on Friday evenings the illuminated gorge opens for night walks.
In short: entry €8.50, free with the Summer Card; about 40 minutes there and back, season until 2 November 2026.
Maiskogel family mountain
Kaprun's family mountain: a gondola from the village centre, the Maisi Flitzer alpine coaster, a hut-to-hut loop with a petting zoo and playgrounds at both stations. In winter it turns into a compact family ski area with a gondola link to the glacier.
In short: gondola €31.50, free with the Summer Card (bikes too); Maisi Flitzer from €7 extra.
Kaprun Castle
The castle has watched over Kaprun since the 12th century. Today it opens for tours from early July to mid-September, hosts the castle festival in July and a Christmas market in Advent. Our castle page also covers all the museums in Kaprun.

For rainy days: spa, museums & cinema

The dam tour at the reservoirs runs mostly inside the wall, rain or shine.

Three days in Kaprun
- Day 1, the big mountain: Kitzsteinhorn in the morning (clearest views), the cool gorge in the afternoon.

Getting around without a car
Bus line 660 links Zell am See, Kaprun and the Kesselfall car park, free for overnight guests with the Guest Mobility Ticket.
