The Maiskogel is Kaprun's family mountain: gentle hiking trails instead of jagged ridges, alpine huts with a petting zoo, the Maisi Flitzer alpine coaster and a gondola that starts right in the village centre. In winter it becomes a compact family ski area with a lift link to the glacier. From Chalet Kaprun it's 2.5 kilometres to the valley station.
The Maiskogel family mountain
With its top station at 1,570 metres, the Maiskogel deliberately stays below the high-alpine zone, and that's exactly what makes it pleasant for families: short distances, plenty of meadow, no altitude troubles. The MK Maiskogelbahn carries you up from Kaprun's centre (768 m) in two sections, in about 12 minutes.
The valley station has a family leisure park with a slide paradise, bouncy castle, climbing wall and carousel; the top station adds a playground with a marble run. In between lies a mountain full of hiking and biking routes, including the beginner-friendly Maiskogel Trail.
Maisi Flitzer: the alpine coaster
The Maisi Flitzer is Kaprun's alpine coaster and runs all year: 1,300 metres of descent with loops, waves and jumps, up to 40 km/h and at points 11 metres above the ground. The full circuit including the ride up takes about 12 minutes.

Hiking & hut stops: the hut loop
From the top station, the hut loop wanders from alm to alm, partly pram-friendly and with a stop wherever you look: the Alpengasthof Glocknerblick (1,670 m) with its Grossglockner view, the Maiskogel Alm Ranch with a petting zoo, plus the Unterbergalm and Saulochalm. Bikers take the Maiskogel Trail, and the gondola carries bikes, free with the Summer Card.
Maiskogelbahn: operating times & prices 2026
In summer 2026 the MK Maiskogelbahn runs daily from 9 am to 5 pm (last ride up 4 pm), until 4 October and again from 24 October to 1 November (as of August 2026).

Good to know
With the Zell am See Summer Card the gondola is included, bikes too. Chalet Kaprun guests find the card at check-in. Only the Maisi Flitzer costs extra.
Winter on the Maiskogel: family skiing with a glacier link
In winter the Maiskogel is Kaprun's family ski area: around 20 kilometres of slopes between 768 and 1,730 metres, practice terrain, the Maisi Park for freestyle beginners and the Maisi Line fun slope. Ski schools and rental sit right at the valley station; the season is expected to run from early December into spring (as of August 2026, dates not yet published).
The real trump card: via the 3K K-onnection, the Maiskogel links directly to the Kitzsteinhorn. Board the gondola in the village centre and switch between family mountain and glacier without a detour, ski-in/ski-out from Kaprun.
Your base at the family mountain: Chalet Kaprun
The Maiskogelbahn valley station lies 2.5 kilometres from Chalet Kaprun, so in winter you're at the practice slope in minutes, in summer at the coaster and the hut loop. As an official Summer Card partner, the gondola ride is covered for chalet guests. Afterwards: a kitchen for the family meal, 6 bedrooms for undisturbed naps, a sauna for the parents in the evening and 1,000 m² of garden for the rest. Dogs welcome.
